I started Orson’s Publishing back in June/July 2016, and am making the difficult announcement now that on June 1st, 2020, Orson’s Publishing will be closing. Because I feel as if Orson’s Publishing supporters deserve an explanation, I’ll start here: the reason why Orson’s Publishing is closing is simple—time and money.

But, mostly time.

I won’t go into the tiny details here, but publishing books takes time. Lots of it. And energy—to fight for an author, to fight for a project, to fight for attention, to wear different hats, and to wear those hats well.

To a degree, I knew all of that before I ever started Orson’s Publishing, and I certainly know that now. For anyone that’s unfamiliar with the amount of work small and micro presses put in, know that it’s a climb. The fact that you’re here, reading this, tells me that you have an interest in small and micro presses. Be sure to give them thanks when you can.

This summer I’ll be entering a new chapter of my life: I’ll proudly become a father. In many ways, as I try to keep my excitement about meeting my child in check, I think I’m already living in that chapter, and that doing so has enabled me to look at the climb small and micro presses make in a different light. I pictured the time I’ll want to be spending with my child being spent reading new book-length submissions, or querying a book reviewer, or packing books into envelopes, or any of the other tasks that I’ve happily done for four years.

And it simply made me sad.

I believe those tasks, and all the other tasks involved with the publication process, have meaning. I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve done. I’m incredibly grateful for the kind and talented people with whom I’ve had the opportunity to work.

But, continuing to put as much time and effort into Orson’s Publishing as I have would mean that soon I’d be going through the motions.

My friends, I have the foresight to know that soon enough my heart just won’t be in it. And I have the foresight to know that that wouldn’t be good for anyone.
