Orson's Publishing Jobs
You can’t stop thinking about books. And not just reading books, or writing books, but about how books are created. The editorial process. No, not just red-penning line edits either; you can’t stop thinking about the design process, about the relationship that should be cultivated between editor and author.
You’re deadline-driven, but, more than that, you’re quality-driven. You want the books you help bring into the world to be great and, if there’s an element to making that book great that you’re not confident you know at this moment (i.e. cover design), you’ll roll your sleeves up and dive in on the education necessary to gain confidence.
As a Book Editor at Orson’s Publishing, you’ll read and respond to a high volume of book submissions, and you’ll be comfortable politely debating why or why not certain titles should get our staff’s attention. You’ll be the author’s point of contact through their book’s editorial and promotional processes, and will therefore be responsible for the setting of realistic expectations. The Book Editor position requires both versatility and flexibility—while there are certain processes in place, each project is different and should be treated as such.
Ideally, you have a few years of editorial experience—as a Book Editor, or a Fiction Editor, a Nonfiction Editor (we no longer accept book-length poetry manuscripts)—though Orson’s will train you if you don’t have that experience but can demonstrate why you’d be the perfect fit. If you believe you’re the best candidate for this part-time role, we’d love to hear from you.
